Maintaining and strengthening energy security is an urgent challenge not only for Japan but for the international society. The world energy situation is changing rapidly, such as through structural change in global demand and supply market, oil price stagnation, and the importance of addressing climate change issues. Under such circumstances, energy-related international organizations are continuing their efforts for structural reform and modernization, including the adoption of International Energy Charter (IEC), and "Association Initiative" by International Energy Agency (IEA), a new initiative to strengthen further cooperation with non-member countries. Throughout the year strengthening the global energy architecture have been discussed in many international fora, including G7, G20, and International Energy Forum (IEF) Ministerial Meeting. This workshop is an opportunity to review the discussion of this year on global energy architecture. In addition, Japan would like to support the outreach activities of the Energy Charter Treaty, as the Chair, considering the recent increase of energy demand in emerging countries, particularly in Asia.

Based on these present situations, this workshop, inviting Dr. Urban Rusnák, Secretary General, Energy Charter Secretariat and Dr. Sun Xiansheng, Secretary General, International Energy Forum, aims to figure out challenges and the future outlook of the energy security in Asia through discussion on two themes: "How to strengthen Energy Security by better mobilizing global energy while addressing climate change", and "Global Energy Architecture for better global energy future."

We are looking forward to your participation.
