On August 25 (Thu.), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs organized “Fukushima Study Tour” to visit the Fukushima Renewable Energy Institute, the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) and other sites in Koriyama City, Fukushima Prefecture and invited members of diplomatic corps in Tokyo. 12 diplomats from 10 countries participated and Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Motome Takisawa led the delegation. This initiative was supported by AIST, Koriyama City and Fukushima Prefecture, and the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy.

This tour is degisned to introduce and publicize the progress made in Fukushima with regard to expanding the roles of renewable energy and building models for the realization of a hydrogen society, in line with “The Fukushima Plan for a New Energy Society” (see note) that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced during his visit to Fukushima in March this year. The delegation also visited the sites in Fukishima that symbolizes the reconstruction of the region as well as the international friendship between Fukushima and the world.

(Note) “The Fukushima Plan for a New Energy Society”
This plan is based on the Prime Minister Mr.Shinzo Abe’s initiative to create a model in Fukushima for the realization of a future new energy society, while providing the world with information on this model, and establishing Fukushima as a pioneering location with regard to renewable energy and the future hydrogen society.

At Fukushima Renewable Energy Institute, AIST, which is Japan’s leading public research institute specialized in renewable energy, Parliamentary Vice-Minister Mr. Motome Takisawa delivered remarks on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Afterwards, the participating diplomats toured the research facilities related to the use of solar power, wind power, hydrogen, geothermal heat, and underground heat, and thus deepened their knowledge and understanding about the institute’s cutting-edge technologies as well as the advanced stage of its research and development.

The delegation had a fruitful exchange of views with the Mayor of Koriyama City, and then visited the sites in Koriyama City and the area around Lake Inawashiro, including “Fukushima Ouse Winery,” which is part of Koriyama City’s Six-Industry Fruit Farming Project aiming at accelerating the reconstruction following the Great East Japan Earthquake.

Participating diplomats expressed keen interest in the research activities of most-advanced technologies undertaken by AIST, and highly appreciated that this tour helped deepen their understandings of the Fukushima’s efforts for introducting more newable energy, adding that this visit of diplomats to Fukushima is a message to showcase the world’s solitarity with Japan.
