On December 23, the 8th Meeting of the Advisory Board for Promoting Science and Technology Diplomacy was held online, chaired by Prof. MATSUMOTO Yoichiro, Science and Technology Advisor to the Minister for Foreign Affairs.
- At the outset, Prof. Matsumoto emphasized that the role of science and technology (S&T) is becoming increasingly important even in the diplomatic arena. He therefore called for open discussions on how to advance S&T diplomacy more effectively, bearing in mind that the promotion of strategic S&T diplomacy is expected to be one of the pillars of the upcoming “7th Science and Technology Innovation Basic Plan” which will commence in the next fiscal year.
- In response to that, the Board members engaged in a lively discussion regarding the challenges and future direction of S&T diplomacy, with consideration of the current international situation and S&T trends.
