International Journalists Symposium 2012: The Great East Japan Earthquake and the Role of the Media

- On Friday, March 23, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan will host the “International Journalists Symposium 2012: The Great East Japan Earthquake and the Role of the Media” at International Conference Hall of JICA Research Institute.
- This symposium will be attended by Japanese journalists of national papers, TV, and the media in the disaster-affected area, as well as, international journalists from China, Germany, India, Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, Qatar, the United Kingdom, and the United States, to examine disaster reporting by the media, and to discuss the role of the media in the reconstruction process, from their respective viewpoints.

The symposium started in 1995, on the occasion of the fiftieth year since the end of World War II, with the aim of fostering further mutual understanding in the Asia-Pacific region through intellectual exchanges and dialogues. Since 2005, the symposium has addressed themes that extend beyond the Asia-Pacific region, such as “Islam” and “Africa”. This year’s symposium marks its 17th round of talks since its inception.
