- Mr. Nii Odunton, Secretary-General of the International Seabed Authority (ISA), will visit Japan from Sunday, January 22 to Sunday, January 29 at the invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
- During his stay, Secretary-General Odunton will meet with senior officials of the Government of Japan and exchange views with members of organizations related to the development of marine mineral resources, as well as visit facilities of marine research institutes.
- The visit by Mr. Odunton is expected to further deepen the cooperation between Japan and the ISA.

— The ISA is an autonomous international organization established under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the Agreement relating to the Implementation of Part XI of UNCLOS, for the purpose of administrating mineral resources of "the Area," or the deep seabed beyond the limits of national jurisdiction, which is defined by UNCLOS as the "common heritage of mankind."
— Since the establishment of the ISA in 1994, Japan has been serving as a member state of its Council. Japanese nationals have been elected as members of its Legal and Technical Commission as well as its Finance Committee.
