Japan-EU English Haiku Contest

  1. The Japan-EU English Haiku Contest is jointly held by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan and the European Union (EU) on the theme of “Japan and Europe.” One grand prize winning haiku will be announced at the occasion of a joint press conference of the 19th EU-Japan Summit to be held on April 28.

  2. The contest is open to the public of nationals of Japan or EU member states who reside in Japan or the EU. The grand prize winner will be invited to Dogo Onsen in Matsuyama City, which is considered to be the center of modern Haiku in Japan.

  3. Mr. Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Council, will attend the Summit and is interested in haiku. Haiku is becoming increasingly popular in Europe, and it is believed that holding this contest will deepen understanding regarding Japan-Europe relations at the citizen level, as well as further spread haiku culture in Europe.
