Mr. Katsuya Okada, Minister for Foreign Affairs, to attend the Second Mekong-Japan Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

- If circumstances allow, Mr. Katsuya Okada, Minister for Foreign Affairs,
will attend the Second Mekong-Japan Foreign Ministers’ Meeting to be held
on October 3 (Sat) in Siem Reap, Cambodia. He is scheduled to visit Cambodia
from October 2 (Fri) to October 4 (Sun). In addition to Japan, the five
countries of the Mekong Region (Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Viet
Nam) will also be participating in the meeting.
- Japan has been assisting the Mekong Region development and has been
strengthening its relations with the Mekong Region countries from the perspective
of redressing the existing intra-regional disparities, thereby promoting
the ASEAN integration. The year 2009 is “Mekong-Japan Exchange Year,”
in which the exchange between Japan and the Mekong Region countries is promoted
in various fields.
- In the upcoming Meeting, an exchange of opinions regarding the strengthening of Mekong-Japan relations is scheduled to take place. Taking this opportunity, Minister Okada also plans to hold bilateral meetings with other foreign ministers participating in the Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.
