The First Round of Negotiations for the Conclusion of the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty between Japan and the European Union

- The first round of negotiations for the conclusion of the Mutual Legal
Assistance Treaty between Japan and the European Union will be held in Tokyo
on from April 8th (Wed) to April 10th (Fri).
- From the Japanese side, officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,
the Ministry of Justice and the National Police Agency, headed by Mr. Noriteru
Fukushima, Deputy Director-General, European Affairs Bureau, Ministry of
Foreign Affairs, will participate in the negotiations. From the EU side,
officials from the EU Presidency (Czech Republic), the Incoming EU Presidency
(Sweden), the General Secretariat of the EU Council and the European Commission,
headed by Ms Svetlana Klouckova, Director of the International Department,
Supreme Prosecutor Service of the Czech Republic, will participate.
- At the negotiations, both sides will discuss a draft treaty by which Japan and the EU will be able to provide mutual legal assistance more effectively, in order to further strengthen the cooperation in the field of criminal justice between Japan and the EU.
