Visit to Japan by Mr. Pascal Lamy, Director-General of the World Trade Organization

- Mr. Pascal Lamy, Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO),
will visit Japan from February 24 (Tue) to 26 (Thu) at the invitation of
the Government of Japan.
- During his stay in Japan, Mr. Lamy, who also visited Japan in July 2006
and March 2007, will pay a courtesy call on Prime Minister Taro Aso and
have meetings with government ministers and officials including Mr. Hirofumi
Nakasone, Minister for Foreign Affairs; Mr. Shoichi Nakagawa, Minister of
Finance; Mr. Shigeru Ishiba, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries;
and Mr. Toshihiro Nikai, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, to exchange
views on how to deal with the future WTO Doha Development Agenda negotiations
and how to respond to protectionism.
- Mr. Lamy, who served as European Commissioner for Trade from 1999 to 2004 and assumed his current post in September 2005, has been playing a major role in promoting the WTO Doha Development Agenda negotiations.
