Joint Monitoring Committee of the TICAD Process
February 4, 2009
- The Joint Monitoring Committee of the TICAD Process will be held on
February 9 (Mon) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. The
Committee will be chaired by Mr. Yoshitaka Akimoto, Director-General for
African Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and will be attended by representatives
of the ministries concerned, government agencies, TICAD co-organizers (the
United Nations, the United Nations Development Program, and the World Bank),
the African Union Committee, international organizations, the African Diplomatic
Corps, and donor countries. Mr. Nobuhide Minorikawa, Parliamentary
Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, will also attend the opening session.
- Under the “TICAD Follow-up Mechanism,” which was established in the
Fourth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD IV)
last year, the Joint Monitoring Committee of the TICAD Process is intended
to 1) compile an “Annual Progress Report” covering the progress of the
assistance measures for Africa announced at TICAD IV and 2) prepare for
the TICAD Ministerial Follow-up Meeting scheduled for March in Botswana.
- Based on the “Annual Progress Report,” the TICAD Ministerial Follow-up Meeting is expected to issue new proposals after reviewing and evaluating the progress of the assistance measures at ministerial level. In addition, as Prime Minister Taro Aso stated at the recent World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, the Meeting will put voices of Africa together with a view to presenting these voices to the Second Summit on Financial and World Economy in April. In the Joint Monitoring Committee of the TICAD Process, participants are expected to exchange views on this issue for the success of the Ministerial Meeting.
