Opening Reception for Mekong-Japan Exchange Year

- On January 20 (Tue) in Tokyo, Mr. Hirofumi Nakasone, Minister for Foreign
Affairs, will host the opening reception of the Mekong-Japan Exchange Year.
- It was agreed at the Mekong-Japan Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held in
Tokyo in January 2008 to celebrate 2009 as the Mekong-Japan Exchange Year.
Japan and the five countries in the Mekong region (Cambodia, Laos,
Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam) will carry out exchange projects covering
wide-ranging fields throughout the year.
- The reception is one of the projects to be implemented by the Government of Japan as the Exchange Year starts, and will be attended by people concerned in many fields including the Diet, economic circles, academia and the mass media. Young amateur traditional artists from the Mekong countries (20 each, total 100) who will be visiting Japan through the Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths (JENESYS) Programme will also attend the reception and will perform their own traditional arts.
