Voluntary Replenishment Meeting of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria

- From September 26 (Wed) to 28 (Fri), a replenishment meeting
of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (Global Fund)
will be held in Berlin with about 30 countries, three international organizations
and two private-sector organizations participating. Mr. Kofi Annan,
former Secretary-General of the United Nations, will chair the ministerial
session to be held on September 27, and Ms. Angela Merkel, Chancellor of
the Federal Republic of Germany, the host country, and others will deliver
speeches.
- From Japan, Mr. Masaharu KOHNO, Deputy Minister for Foreign
Affairs, as the head of delegation, and Mr. Jun YAMAZAKI, Deputy Director-General,
Consular Affairs Bureau, and Deputy Director-General (in charge of Global
Issues), International Cooperation Bureau, Foreign Ministry, will attend
the conference.
- As a major donor country in Asia, Japan has contributed about 660 million dollars to the Global Fund. Japan’s cumulative contribution to the Global Fund is the fourth biggest, accounting for about 7% of the total. At the end of June 2005, then Prime Minister Junichiro KOIZUMI pledged an additional contribution of 500 million dollars in the coming years, of which about 320 million dollars have already been disbursed.
