First Session of the Preparatory Committee of the 2010 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons

  1. The First Session of the Preparatory Committee of the 2010 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) will be held from April 30 (Mon) to May 11 (Fri) in Vienna.
  2. At the Preparatory Committee, wide-ranging discussions will be held on nuclear disarmament, non-proliferation, and the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, to prepare for the 2010 NPT Review Conference.  Mr. Yukiya Amano, Ambassador of the Permanent Mission of Japan to the International Organizations in Vienna, will chair the meeting.  In order for Japan to proactively contribute to the successful outcome of the Committee, the Japanese representative will give a speech on April 30 (Mon), the first day of the Committee, and Mr. Sumio Tarui, Ambassador of Japan to the Conference on Disarmament, and others, will deliver speeches at each meeting during the Committee.
  3. As Japan places extreme importance on the maintaining and strengthening of the NPT as the foundation of the international nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation regime, this Committee is highly important.  Japan intends to proactively take part in discussions aimed at maintaining and strengthening the NPT regime.
