Visit to Japan by Ms. Louise Arbour, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights

  1. Ms. Louise Arbour, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, will visit Japan from January 25 (Thu) to 27 (Sat) as a Guest of the Minister for Foreign Affairs.
  2. During her stay, Ms. Arbour will exchange views with Mr. Taro Aso, Minister for Foreign Affairs, and other senior officials of the Government of Japan on United Nations reform in the field of human rights including the establishment of the Human Rights Council and how to deal with human rights issues in the international community including North Korea.
  3. On the U.N. activities tackling human rights issues, Japan has constructed cooperative relations with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). It is expected that the visit to Japan by Ms. Arbour will further enhance the cooperative relationship.
  4. Ms. Arbour visited Japan in November 2004, and this will be her second visit.
