November 10, 2006
- Dr. Mohamed ElBaradei, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), will visit Japan from November 29 (Wed) to December 4 (Mon) as Guest of the Minister for Foreign Affairs.
- During his stay in Japan, Dr. ElBaradei will talk with Mr. Taro Aso, Minister for Foreign Affairs, and other leaders of the government. He will deliver a public lecture in Tokyo and attend a panel forum in Kyoto. Dr. ElBaradei will also hold a press conference at the Japan National Press Club.
- Dr. ElBaradei will exchange frank opinions with Japanese government leaders on such matters as the nuclear issues of North Korea and Iran, and how the international nuclear non-proliferation regime should be maintained and strengthened. It is expected that relations between the IAEA and Japan, an important IAEA member, will be further strengthened. It is also hoped that through the lecture and panel forum, Japanese people from all walks of life will have a better understanding of IAEA activities such as nuclear non-proliferation and the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
- This will be Dr. ElBaradei's first visit to Japan since October 2004 and his fifth as IAEA Director General.
