The 13th Japan-EU (European Union) Summit Meeting

  1. The 13th Japan-EU (European Union) Summit Meeting will be held on June 22 (Tue), in Tokyo (Office of the Prime Minister).

  2. The Meeting will be attended on the Japanese side by Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and other officials, and on the EU side by Mr. Bertie Ahern, Taoiseach (Prime Minister of Ireland), Presidency of the EU; Mr. Romano Prodi, President of the European Commission; and other key figures.

  3. At the Meeting, the first to be held after the enlargement of the EU on May 1, the leaders of Japan and the EU will exchange, from a viewpoint of strategic partnership, wide-ranging views on political and economic relations, the economic situation and the current international situation; they will also affirm the preparations for the 2005 EU-Japan Year of People to People Exchanges and the progress of the "Action Plan for EU-Japan Cooperation" adopted and announced in 2001.

  4. A meeting of the Japan-EU Business Dialogue Round Table (BDRT), a framework of the dialogue for the Japan-EU business leaders, will be held on June 20 and 21 in Tokyo prior to the Japan-EU Summit and Mr. Ichiro Aisawa, Senior Vice Foreign Minister, will participate. At the BDRT, chairmen of both Japan and the EU will submit the policy proposals to the leaders of Japan and the EU.

  5. On this occasion, Mr. Junichiro Koizumi, Prime Minister of Japan and Mr. Bertie Ahern, Taoiseach (Prime Minister of Ireland), will have Japan-Ireland Summit Meeting to exchange views on bilateral political and economic relations and other issues.
