Visit to Japan of Mr. Tommy Thompson, Chairman of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria (Secretary, US Department of Health and Human Services)

- Mr. Tommy Thompson, Chairman of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria (Secretary, US Department of Health and Human Services) will visit Japan from March 20 (Sat) to 22 (Mon) to attend the international symposium "Human Security Challenges of HIV/AIDS and Communicable Diseases in Asia--Exploring Effective Regional and Global Responses--" (co-hosted by: Japan Center for International Exchange and the Asia Society; supported by: Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation), to be held on March 22 in Tokyo. He will deliver a keynote address. Mr. Yoshiro Mori, former prime minister of Japan, will also attend the symposium to give opening remarks.
- Taking the opportunity of the visit, Mr. Thompson will talk with leading figures of the Government of Japan to exchange views on the Global Fund and the prevention of infectious diseases. He will also visit Chiba prefecture which established a sister city relationship with the state of Wisconsin when Mr. Thompson was the governor.
- Mr. Thompson's upcoming visit to Japan will be his first since he was elected chairman of the Global Fund in January last year.
Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria
An international foundation established in January 2002 on the basis of the partnership among donor countries, government of developing countries, NGOs and the private sector (foundations, enterprises, etc.), with its headquarters in Geneva. It provides grant aids for projects supporting the prevention, treatment and care for the three major infectious diseases in developing countries.
