Visit to Japan of Mr. Julio Maria Sanguinetti, President of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay

June 24, 1998

1. Mr. Julio Maria Sanguinetti, President of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, accompanied by a suite, will pay a visit to Japan from June 29 (Mon.) to July 1 (Wed.).

2. During his stay in Japan, the President of Uruguay will meet with His Majesty The Emperor of Japan and have talks with Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto. He will also attend the Fifth Symposium on Latin America and the Caribbean to be held under the joint auspices of the Inter-American Development Bank and the Export-Import Bank of Japan.

3. Mr. Sanguinetti will be the first president of Uruguay to visit Japan in nine years. His visit is expected to promote friendly relations between Japan and Uruguay.
