TICAD IV Follow-up Symposium
- Japan's Efforts to Promote Peace and Security in Africa:
The Case of Sudan and Beyond -

3. Background and Objectives:
This symposium will be held as a part of Japan's efforts to follow up TICAD IV with focus on consolidation of peace in Africa. Distinguished guests will be invited from the Government of Sudan, especially H.E. Mr. Salva Kiir Mayardit, the first Vice President of the Government of the Sudan, the UN and the AU. The symposium includes presentations, panel discussions, and questions and answers session. Through these discussions, the symposium aims for raising public awareness and further promoting Japan's efforts on consolidation of peace in Africa.
The symposium consists of two parts. In Part I, invitees from Sudan and UN will make presentations on the current status of Sudan, which provides a representative case of Japan's efforts on consolidation of peace. Japan's assistance and future challenges will be examined and panel discussions will be held. In part II, participants will discuss measures to enhance the peacekeeping capabilities of African countries including assistance for PKO training centers, for which Japan has recently strengthened its support. Part II includes presentations by invitees from the AU and neighboring countries, panel discussions, and questions and answers session.
