Statement by Foreign Minister Keizo Obuchi on the Terrorist Attack on Tourists in Egypt
November 18, 1997
- I was greatly shocked to hear of the terrorist attack on tourists in Luxor, Egypt, on November 17. I cannot but feel deep sorrow and strong indignation at this incident of atrocious terrorism in which many innocent tourists, including some Japanese, were indiscriminately shot to death.
- I wish to extend my deepest condolences to the many victims of this despicable act and their families and my sincere sympathy for the injured.
- Terrorism cannot be justified for any reason what-soever. Japan condemns such a dastardly act. I strongly hope that the Government of Egypt will scrutinize the incident and make the utmost efforts to prevent similar incidents from recurring.
- The Government of Japan, in cooperation with the Government of Egypt, will exert all possible efforts in treating the injured, arranging the return of the deceased, and helping families and other relations of the victims to travel to Egypt.
