Statement by the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan on the Appointment of Mr. Yukio Takasu as Under-Secretary-General for Management of the United Nations

- The Government of Japan welcomes the appointment by United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday, April 25 (US Eastern Standard time) of Mr. Yukio Takasu as Under-Secretary-General for Management.
- The position of Under-Secretary-General for Management is an important one which handles all of the management responsibilities for the UN. It is a position which is increasing in importance as the UN undertakes reform in accordance with the needs of the contemporary international community. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has positioned management reform as a priority issue.
- The Government of Japan expects that as the new Under-Secretary-General for Management, Mr. Takasu will exert every effort to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the UN and strengthen the organization's functions, utilizing his experience thus far.
