Statement by the Press Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, on the Presidential Election in the Federal Republic of Nigeria

  1. On Tuesday, April 18, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria announced the final result of the Presidential Election held on Saturday, April 16, in which Nigeria's incumbent President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan was elected.

  2. Election observation missions from many countries including Japan as well as from various international organizations were deployed across Nigeria to observe this election. The Government of Japan welcomes the fact that despite the occurrence of violent incidents in some places, a large number of Nigerians participated in the election in a positive and orderly manner, and congratulates President Jonathan on his election.

  3. Japan hopes that Nigeria will achieve further development under the leadership of President Jonathan and also expects that the friendly relations between Japan and Nigeria will further strengthen in the future.
