Courtesy Call on Prime Minister Naoto Kan by Mr. Jacques Attali, former President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (Overview)

- On January 18, from 9:30 a.m. for about 20 minutes, Prime Minister Naoto Kan received a courtesy call from Mr. Jacques Attali, former President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).
- During the courtesy call, an exchange of views took place on Japan’s national debt and its declining birthrate and aging population. Mr. Attali noted that the issues of national debt as well as declining birthrate and aging population can be resolved by exercising political leadership. Mr. Attali also described the experience of France’s family policy. He noted that it is best to develop a ten-year vision for the country in order to urge the people to redouble their efforts, and suggested the establishment of a committee comprised of experts who will represent various views of the people. In response, Prime Minister Kan touched upon the issues of Japan’s demographic structure and aging population, and thanked Mr. Attali for his valuable suggestion.
