  1. On August 2 (Mon), for about 20 minutes from 6:00 P.M., Prime Minister Naoto Kan received a courtesy call from H.E. Mr. Jean Ping, Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), at the Prime Minister's Office.

  2. Prime Minister Kan welcomed Chairperson Ping’s visit to Japan, and stated that Japan is willing to further strengthen the Japan-AU relationship, taking the opportunity of this visit. Further, Prime Minister Kan said that Japan will promote actively its assistance to Africa, including the implementation of the official pledge announced at the Fourth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD IV) to double its official development assistance (ODA) to Africa, and expressed the hope that the AUC will take an active part in the TICAD process.

  3. In response, Chairperson Ping expressed his gratitude for the invitation to visit Japan and for Japan’s assistance to Africa. He said that the AUC is eager to cooperate actively with Japan in various areas, including the TICAD process. He also expressed his hope of seeing a strengthened relationship with Japan in the area of trade and investment.

  4. The two leaders shared the view that they will cooperate closely in tackling global issues such as UN Security Council reform and climate change.
