Dispatch of a Japan Disaster Relief Expert Team in response to damage from the eruptions of Mt. Merapi on Central Java Island in Indonesia

  1. On November 8 (Mon), the Government of Japan received a request from the Government of the Republic of Indonesia to send volcanologists in the wake of damage from the eruptions of Mt. Merapi on Central Java Island.

  2. In response to this request, the Government of Japan has decided to dispatch a Japan Disaster Relief expert team comprising volcanologists and other experts.

  3. A volcanologist is scheduled to leave Japan for Indonesia on November 9 (Tue) and two more on November 10 (Wed).

  4. Due to the large-scale eruptions of Mt. Merapi continuing since October 26, the areas under evacuation orders have widened, leaving more than 140 people dead and causing more than 270,000 people to evacuate.
