Formation of an Investigation Team Regarding the so-called “Secret Agreement”

1. Based on the order dated September 16 issued by Mr. Katsuya Okada, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, an investigation team of approximately 15 persons regarding the so-called "secret agreement" was formed under Mr. Mitoji Yabunaka, Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan and headed by Mr. Mitsuru Kitano, Assistant Vice-Minister, Minister's Secretariat, and began operations on September 25.
2. This investigation team will examine 2,694 files regarding the Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security between Japan and the United States, 571 files regarding the return of Okinawa, and approximately 400 files located at the Japanese embassy in the United States, with the intention of making clear the past situation regarding the so-called "secret agreement." The investigation team will present its findings to Minister Okada by around the end of November.
