Emergency Assistance to the United Mexican States in Response to the New Strain of Influenza

- Regarding the new strain of influenza in Mexico, the Government of Japan
has decided to provide emergency relief goods worth approximately 21 million
yen in response to a request from the Government of Mexico. Specifically,
Japan provides 190,000 masks, 3,000 pairs of goggles, 3,000 disposable surgical
clothes, 3,000 pairs of disposable gloves for medical use, and 1,370 bottles
of antiseptic solution for washing hands. These goods will be transported
from Japan on May 2 (Saturday), excepting a part of the antiseptic solution,
which is to be sent out May 4 (Monday).
- In addition, at the request from the Government of Mexico, Japan is
currently carrying out procedures to be able to provide items, including
more than 20 thermograph cameras, as quickly as possible to help strengthen
medical inspection in airports and other locations. Including these items,
Japan’s emergency assistance will total up to 100 million yen.
- Given the global spread of the new strain of influenza, the World Health Organization (WHO) raised its alert level from Phase 4 to 5 on April 29 (Wednesday). Considering this situation, the Government of Japan resolved to respond to the Government of Mexico’s request and provide assistance to enable them to strengthen measures for medical treatment to those who have contracted the disease and medical inspection and quarantine.
