Dispatch of Election Observation Mission for the Provincial Elections in Iraq

The Government of Japan has decided to dispatch an Election Observation Mission to support fair implementation of the Provincial Elections in Iraq to be held on January 31 (Sat). This Mission is headed by Mr. Takehiro Kagawa, Deputy Director-General of the Middle Eastern and African Affairs Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In Iraq, the mission will observe the preparation procedure and voting. It will also exchange views and information with persons concerned with the Electoral Commission, officials of the Iraqi government and other election observation missions.
This is the first provincial election to be carried out under the new Iraqi constitution, which was democratically established in November 2005.
