Emergency Assistance for Flood Disaster in the Republic of the Fiji Islands

- On January 15 (Thu), the Government of Japan decided to provide emergency
relief goods (blankets, sleeping pads, water tanks, and portable jerry cans)
equivalent to about 10 million yen to the Government of the Republic of
the Fiji Islands, which sustained damage from the recent flooding.
- In Fiji, heavy rains from a tropical depression have caused floods throughout
the country since January 8, sweeping away houses and rendering people homeless.
According to an announcement by the Government of Fiji on January
15, 11 people were dead, 1 person missing, and 9, 306 people evacuated in
the disaster. These figures are expected to increase further.
- In response to a request from the Government of Fiji, the Government of Japan has decided to extend this emergency assistance to the victims of the disaster from a humanitarian point of view and in light of the friendly relations between Japan and Fiji.
