Completion of Japan’s Term as Chair of the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission
January 8, 2009
- On January 7 (New York time), Japan completed its term as chair of the
United Nations Peacebuilding Commission, after serving for one-and-a-half
years beginning in June 2007. The succeeding chair country, Chile,
assumed the post in a meeting of the Commission held the same day.
- The UN Peacebuilding Commission was established at the 2005 United Nations
Summit as an advisory body to the Security Council and the General Assembly.
As its second chair, Japan made a strong contribution by conducting
strategic and policy discussions on peacebuilding, strengthening the Commission’s
relationship with the UN’s principle bodies, in particular the Security
Council, and other relevant institutions including the World Bank and the
IMF, and addressing the challenges facing the Commission's target countries
in Africa.
- As a continuing member of the Peacebuilding Commission, Japan will maintain its active engagement in the Commission’s activities.
