The Third Election for the UN Human Rights Council

  1. On May 22 (Thurs) (local time: May 21 (Wed)), the third election for the UN Human Rights Council was held at the UN General Assembly in New York, where Japan was re-elected as a member of the Council in the first round of voting (obtaining the largest vote in the Asia Group). As a result, Japan will continue to serve as a member of the Council for another three year-term beginning from June 19, 2008.
     
  2. Japan has contributed towards the protection and promotion of the human rights conditions and the international human rights norm through such international fora as the Commission on Human Rights and the Human Rights Council, bilateral dialogue, ODA and other means. Japan will continue to play a productive role at the Human Rights Council.
