Emergency Assistance to the Union of Myanmar

- The Government of Japan has decided to extend emergency assistance for
the moment up to $10 million to the Union of Myanmar in response to the
catastrophe caused by a large-scale cyclone that struck the southern part
of Myanmar.
- Japan intends to extend the assistance to Myanmar in cooperation with
such international organizations as the United Nations Children’s Fund,
the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the
World Food Programme.
- Prior to the assistance, on May 5 (Mon) and 7 (Wed), Japan already decided to provide emergency assistance in kind (tents, electric generators, plastic sheets, blankets, portable water tanks, plastic canteens and sleeping mats) equivalent to a total of about $570,000 (about 64 million yen). The emergency assistance decided today is on top of the above emergency assistance in kind.
