G8 Health Experts’ Meeting

- The G8 Health Experts’ Meeting was held in Tokyo (at the United Nations
University) on 14-15 February.
- The meeting was chaired by Mr. Jun Yamazaki, Deputy Director-General
for Global Issues of MOFA, with the participation of health experts from
the G8 members. In the outreach session, they were joined by health experts
from Norway, African Union and 8 organizations known as “Health 8” or
“H8,” namely Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Global Alliance for Vaccines
and Immunization (GAVI), Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria
(GFATM), Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), United Nations
Population Fund (UNFPA), UNICEF, World Bank, and WHO.
- During the meeting, the participants discussed a wide range of health-related topics in preparation for the G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit.

This meeting was organized as a forum for the G8 members to discuss health-related topics in preparation for the G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit. It is a follow-up to the special address by Prime Minister Fukuda in Davos in January, as well as the address by Minister for Foreign Affairs Koumura on “Global Health and Japan’s Foreign Policy – From Okinawa to Toyako in November 2007.
