Emergency Grant Aid for Kenyan Internally Displaced Persons
February 1, 2008
- Following the situation where the number of Kenyan internally displaced
persons has increased to as many as 250,000 persons as a consequence of
presidential election in Kenya, the Government of Japan decided on February
1 (Fri) to provide emergency grant aid of approximately 478 million yen
(approximately 4.12 million dollars), through the World Food Programme (WFP)
and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), for the provision of food
and water as humanitarian assistance to the Kenyan displaced people.
- This Japan’s contribution was also mentioned in the address given by
Mr. Yoshiro Mori (former prime minister of Japan), who represented the Government
of Japan, in the opening ceremony of the African Union Summit being held
in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from January 31.
- Japan will continue to provide assistance to improve the living environment of the Kenyan people and extend cooperation to the delegation of the African Union eminent persons panel, led by Mr. Kofi Annan, former UN Secretary-General, so as to reach political reconciliation quickly through their mediation efforts.
