Emergency Grant Aid for the 2008 Presidential Election in Zambia
October 21, 2008
- On October 21 (Tue), the Government of Japan decided to provide emergency
grant aid totaling about 1.2 million dollars (about 135.6 million yen) through
the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), which manages the trust
fund for this election for the Republic of Zambia, for the purpose of supporting
the fair and smooth implementation of the 2008 presidential election to
be held on October 30 (Thu), following the unexpected sudden death of H.E.
Mr. Levy Mwanawasa, President of Zambia.
- The assistance from the government of Japan will be used for the procurement
of materials necessary for the election (i.e., tents, lanterns, ballot papers
and envelopes, ink bottles for marking those who have voted for the ballot,
and the cost associated with transportation of ballot papers).
- In the Fourth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD IV) held in Yokohama in May this year, the Government of Japan set ‘ensuring “human security”, including the consolidation of peace and good governance, and achievement of the MDGs’ as one of thee pillars towards African Development. This emergency grant aid is expected to contribute further to the promotion of good governance in Africa.
