- The first round of negotiations to conclude a Japan-Kazakhstan Agreement for Cooperation in the Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy was held on June 13 (Wed) in Astana. This round was attended from the Japanese side by: Mr. Takeshi Nakane, Director-General of the Disarmament, Non-proliferation and Science Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Head of the Japanese Delegation) and officials concerned from relevant ministries; and from the Kazakhstani side by: Mr. Timur Zhantikin, Chairman of the Kazakhstan Atomic Energy Committee (Head of the Kazakhstani Delegation) and officials concerned.
- Discussions were held on how to conduct talks in this round as well as in the future, and on the content of the Agreement, which is aimed at promoting cooperation between Japan and Kazakhstan in the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
- The two sides have decided to set the dates for the next round through the diplomatic channel.
