Japan-Russia Strategic Dialogue

- On June 1, the Second Japan-Russia Strategic Dialogue was held at Iikura House, Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
- The Dialogue was attended on the Japanese side by Mr. Shotaro Yachi, Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Junichi Ihara, Deputy Director-General of the Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau, Mr. Keiichi Katakami, Deputy Director-General of the European Affairs Bureau, Mr. Nobukatsu Kanehara, Director of the Policy Coordination Division, Mr. Akira Muto, Director of the Russian Division, and others; and on the Russian side by Mr. Andrei Ivanovich Denisov, First Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Mikhail Mikhailovich Bely, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Japan, Mr. Vasilii Ivanovich Saplin, Deputy Director of the First Asian Department, Ministry of Affairs of the Russian Federation, and others.
- Continuing from the previous dialogue, discussions were held on
the following themes from the viewpoint of common strategic benefits for both
Japan and Russia.
(1) Review of Japan-Russia bilateral relations from the previous strategic dialogue up to the present, Japan-Russia cooperation toward development of the Far East and Eastern Siberia area and the integration of the Asia-Pacific region.
(2) The situation in Northeast Asia, among others in China and on the Korean Peninsula, as well as multinational cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region.
(3) Japan and Russia’s policies toward Asia and Japan-Russia cooperation over Central Asia.
- It was agreed in principle to hold the next consultations in Moscow within this year, and the details will be arranged through diplomatic channels.
