Statement by Mr. Taro Aso, Minister for Foreign Affairs, on the Adoption of the United Nations Security Council Resolution concerning Iran’s Nuclear Issue

1. On March 24 (Sat) New York time (25 (Sun) Japan Time), the United Nations Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 1747, stipulating that it would add further measures concerning Iran’s nuclear issue. Japan highly appreciates this adoption as demonstrating the determined stance of the international community toward Iran’s nuclear issue.

2. From such viewpoints as the firm maintenance of the nuclear non-proliferation regime, relations with North Korea’s nuclear issues, and the stability of the Middle East region with a significant influence on the energy supply, Japan deems that a stringent and resolute stance should be taken against Iran’s nuclear activities. From this standpoint, Japan has consulted closely with countries concerned in discussions towards the adoption of the resolution.

3. Japan considers it deplorable that Iran has not answered the requirements in U.N. resolutions including the suspension of enrichment and reprocessing activities, and plans related to heavy water. Japan strongly hopes that the issue will be solved peacefully through negotiations and intends to seize every opportunity to urge Iran to accept these requirements and return to the negotiation process as soon as possible.
