Japan contributes US$ 186 million to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria

1. Every year, AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria - the three major infectious diseases - kill six million people all over the world. The number of people infected with HIV/AIDS is increasing steadily, including in Asia. It is estimated that 39.5 million people in the world are now living with HIV/AIDS.
2. The contribution to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, announced today, is a testimony to Japan's firm commitment to continue its assistance in the fight against the killer diseases and its high regard for the important role the Global Fund is playing in this global endeavour.
3. This contribution is part of US$ 500 million pledge to the Global Fund to be paid in the coming years, that then Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi announced in June 2005. Out of this contribution, Japan already contributed US$ 130 million in March 2006.
