Signing of the International Tropical Timber Agreement, 2006

  1. On February 16 (Fri) (February 17 (Sat) Japan time), Ambassador Kenzo Oshima, Permanent Representative of Japan to the United Nations, signed the International Tropical Timber Agreement, 2006, at the headquarters of the United Nations in New York.
  2. This Agreement was adopted on January 27 last year in Geneva to succeed the current International Tropical Timber Agreement, 1994. If the ratification or other necessary procedures have been taken by the required number of countries, the Agreement will enter into force on February 1, 2008 or on any date thereafter.
  3. This Agreement, through international cooperation between producer countries and consumer countries of tropical timber, aims to develop the international trade in tropical timber and promote the sustainable management of tropical forests.
