Statement by Mr. Masahiko Koumura, Minister for Foreign Affairs, on lifting of the State of Emergency in Pakistan

- On December 15, Saturday, President Musharraf lifted the State of Emergency
of November 3rd and restored the constitutional order as he publicly committed.
These steps along with his resignation from the chief of army staff are
important for the consolidation of Democracy in Pakistan. The Government
of Japan appreciates these actions.
- The Government of Japan strongly hopes that the general election scheduled
on January 8th next year will be held in free and fair manner and thus,
the foundation of democracy in Pakistan will be further strengthened.
- Pakistan is playing an important role in the Fight against Terrorism and consolidating its foundation for democracy is vital for Pakistan to continue its role. In this regard, Japan intends to continue its support towards Pakistan in their endeavors.
