Mr. Kemal Derviş, Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Pays a Call on Mr. Masahiko Koumura, Minister for Foreign Affairs

- Mr. Kemal Derviş, Admini strator of the United Nations Development Programme
(UNDP), paid a call on Mr. Masahiko Koumura, Minister for Foreign Affairs,
from 5:40 p.m. to 6:25 p.m. on December 10.
- Mr. Koumura highly appreciated the UNDP’s leadership as the co-host
of TICAD IV in coordinating the cooperative efforts of the United Nations
and other international organizations, and requested the UNDP’s further
cooperation for TICAD IV. On climate change, he expressed the intention
to provide assistance to developing countries based on the “Cool Earth
50” which Japan announced this May, and said he would like to actively
cooperate with the UNDP, which has the expertise in this field.
- Mr. Derviş, after expressing his appreciation for Japan’s continued
support to the UNDP, said that the UNDP would make its best efforts to cooperate
with Japan for the success of TICAD IV and the Hokkaido Toyako Summit. With
regard to climate change, he mentioned that the UNDP wished to play an active
role in facilitating negotiations towards developing measures in which all
countries can participate.
- Mr. Derviş also mentioned that many developing countries appreciate Japan’s contribution, and Japan can work as a bridge between developing and developed countries since it is in a position different from those of Western countries.
