November 1, 2007
- On November 1 (Thu), the Government of Japan decided to provide emergency
relief goods (tents, sleeping pads, blankets, water purifiers and plastic
sheets), equivalent to about 13 million yen, to the Government of the Dominican
Republic, which has sustained damage caused by the tropical storm Noel.
- According to an announcement of the Government of the Dominican Republic
(as of October 31), 56 people were dead, more than 58,000 affected, 14,582
houses totally or partially destroyed, and such infrastructure as roads
and bridges and agricultural produce damaged.
- In the region, the disaster-afflicted are forced to lead an inconvenient
life in shelters. The Government of the Dominican Republic, while making
rehabilitation efforts of its own, requested emergency assistance from the
Government of Japan.
- The Government of Japan has decided to extend this emergency assistance from a humanitarian point of view for the disaster-afflicted while taking into account the friendly relations with the Dominican Republic.
