Meeting between Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, Special Advisor to U.N. Secretary-General, and Mr. Mitoji Yabunaka, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs

  1. On October 26 (Fri), Mr. Mitoji Yabunaka, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, met with Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, Special Advisor to U.N. Secretary-General, for about one hour from 11:30 AM, to discuss the Myanmar issue.
     
  2. In this meeting, Prof. Gambari explained results of his visits to Myanmar and other Asian countries, and requested Japan’s support for the good offices efforts of the UN Secretary-General including his role.
     
  3. Deputy Minister Yabunaka conveyed his concern on the situation of democratization and human rights in Myanmar, and expressed his deep regret that there were many casualties including the death of a Japanese citizen in the recent demonstrations.  Deputy Minister Yabunaka also ensured Prof. Gambari of the full support of the Government of Japan towards the good offices efforts of the UN Secretary-General.
