Emergency Grant Aid for the Landslide Disaster in Southern Leyte, Philippines

  1. The Government of Japan has decided to extend emergency grant aid of 535,715 US dollars (26.25 million Philippine pesos; about 57 million yen) for the construction of shelters to the Government of the Philippines, which has suffered from a massive landslide in Southern Leyte.
  2. Those who have lost their houses and properties in the landslide disaster area are now forced to stay in a serious harmful situation without clear prospects for future. In light of such situation the Government of the Philippines requested to the Government of Japan to provide building materials and facilities for constructing the shelters.
  3. This aid will be used for the rehabilitation of Barangay Guinsaugon, Saint Bernard, which suffered most serious damage in this disaster.

Japan's assistance to the Philippines for the landslide disaster (updated)

  1. Emergency assistance in kind (tents, blankets etc.) amount to approximately 25million yen (February 21).
  2. Dispatch of two natural-disaster-management experts to study and assess the secondary disaster risk (February 22-24).
  3. Dispatch of a dactylography examiner for disaster victim identification (February 28-March 3).
  4. Dispatch of a needs assessment team for the assistance of the reconstruction and rehabilitation in the distress areas (March 1-3).
