Emergency Assistance for the Landslide in Leyte of the Philippines

- On Sunday February 19, the Government of Japan decided to provide emergency assistance in kind (tents, blankets, plastic sheets, sleeping pads, plastic tanks, water purifiers, water tanks, electric generators), equivalent to approximately 25 million yen, to the Republic of the Philippines, who suffers serious disaster, in the Leyte Island, from a massive landslide.
- A record downpour in the southern part of the island in this month might cause the massive landslide on February 17 morning. The government of the Philippines has announced that 56 dead bodies are reported and more than 1,400 people are missing.
- The government of Japan has continued to inform the government of the Philippines, since just after the landside, that Japan would provide necessary emergency assistance including the rescue team, medical team, goods, and equipments. Upon receiving the emergency request made by the government of the Philippines, Japan made the above decision of emergency assistance, in light of humanitarian viewpoint as well as our long-standing cordial relations between Japan and the Philippines.
- Japan considers further assistances under the coming requests from the Philippines, taking into account of the situation in the Southern Leyte.
