September 2, 2005

In response to the loss of lives and severe damage caused by the landfall of Hurricane Katrina in the Southern part of the United States, the Government of Japan (GoJ), with a view to contributing to the rescue and relief efforts, has decided to take the following measures;

  • In order to assist those affected by the storm, Japan will provide two hundred thousand dollars to the American Red Cross, which is running the largest scale relief operation.
  • The GoJ will identify the needs in the affected regions through the U.S. Government, and upon request, is ready to provide necessary and available emergency assistance supply amounting to up to three hundred thousand dollars (such as tents, blankets, power generators, portable water tanks, etc.) from a supply deposit maintained by the GoJ in Florida.
