Statement by Mr. Nobutaka Machimura, Minister for Foreign Affairs, on the Killing of Mr. Ihab El-Sherif, Egyptian Ambassador to Iraq

1. On July 7 (Japan time: July 8) I have learned with profound shock that Mr. Ihab El-Sherif, Egyptian Ambassador to Iraq, was killed by terrorists, and express my deepest condolences to the Government of Egypt and his bereaved family.
2. Terrorism cannot be justified for any reason, and the Government of Japan strongly condemns terrorist atrocities.

Note: On July 8, Prime Minister Koizumi sent a condolence message to Egyptian President Mubarak, and Foreign Minister Machimura similarly sent a message to Egyptian Foreign Minister Aboul Gheit.
