Japan's Cooperation to Strengthen United Nations Activities in Iraq

  1. The Government of Japan has decided to extend $7,500,000 as expenses to expand the security activities of UNAMI (United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq), with a view to contributing to strengthen its activities in Iraq.

  2. In a letter, dated December 15 last year, sent to UN Secretary General Koffi Annan Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi conveyed Japan's intention to provide all possible cooperation for the expansion of UN presence and activities. The financial contribution this time materializes this intention.

  3. Japan expects that its cooperation will help strengthen UNAMI's activities and that the Iraqi political process and reconstruction will proceed as it enters a new phase after the National Assembly election was held on 30th January.
