Adoption of the International Convention against Doping in Sport at the 33rd General Conference of UNESCO

  1. The International Convention against Doping in Sport was adopted on October 19 (Wed), 2005, at the 33rd General Conference meeting of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Paris.
  2. The Convention is the first worldwide intergovernmental agreement aimed at establishing a system to promote and strengthen cooperative activities led by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) at domestic and global levels toward eradication of doping, out of concerns about the use of doping by athletes in sports and the consequences thereof for their health, the principle of fair play, the elimination of cheating and the future in sport.
  3. As a member of WADA Executive Committee, Japan has proactively contributed to the elimination of doping, and thus has actively made efforts in drawing up this Convention.
